Cemeteries

St. Mary's Cemetery and St. Patrick's Cemetery are located east of business Highway 71 on South Avenue – near Deluxe Manufacturing. St. Gregory’s Cemetery Board oversees the maintenance of both cemeteries. Call the parish office at 582-3833 for more information.

St. Patrick’s Cemetery was founded in 1899 to serve the Irish Catholics of St. Patrick’s Parish in Maryville. St. Mary’s Cemetery was founded to serve the German parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish in Maryville. The original cemetery was located just east and north of the old St. Mary’s Church (just north of the present St. Gregory’s Church). The bodies were moved to the new cemetery but not always marked well. Some were even discovered when the new St. Gregory’s School was built in 1963. The Franciscan Sisters from Mount Alverno Convent are also buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

 Families from St. Benedict’s Parish in Burlington Junction, about 14 miles away are buried at St. Patrick’s or St. Mary’s since St. Benedict’s was a Mission Parish of Maryville for many years. Its records are kept at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio.

Even though the two parishes of St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s were combined in 1960 to form the current St. Gregory’s Parish, the two cemeteries still retain their old names and are jointly administered by one cemetery board.
